The Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Award will be presented to John Carr at 7:00 p.m. (CST) on Friday, March 29, 2019 at the Catholic Theological Union Bernardin Center. Following the award presentation, Brian Flanagan, will give the 2019 Msgr. Philip J. Murnion Lecture. The lecture, “Dialogue in a Humbled Church” will bring the Catholic Common Ground Initiative’s call for dialogue and overcoming of differences in faith to this urgent moment of crisis in the global church.

Cardinal Joseph Bernardin Awardee 

John Carr is the Director of the Initiative on Catholic Social Thought and Public Life at Georgetown University. He founded the Initiative in 2013 to promote civil dialogue at the intersection of faith and politics, to reach out to a new generation of leaders, and to share Catholic Social Teaching more broadly and deeply. 

 

Msgr. Philip J. Murnion Lecturer 

Brian P. Flanagan is Associate Professor of Theology at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia, where he teaches undergraduate courses in introductory theology, church, and liturgy. He earned his PhD in Systematic Theology at Boston College and pursues research in ecclesiology, ecumenism, and liturgical theology. He is the author of Stumbling in Holiness: Sin and Sanctity in the Church (Liturgical Press, 2018).
